Wooden Playgrounds

We recently had a discussion about the evolution of playgrounds in one of my graduate classes. It got me thinking about my childhood love of giant wooden playgrounds, and how so few of them exist anymore.

So, I performed a little google-image search (love google-image search), and found these. They take me back to the days of playing "pirate and princess" and precariously crossing the wobbly bridge to the awesomely giant silver slide...

  1. When I was a kid there was nothing I loved more than these types of playgrounds. There was an awesome one called Rocketland in Auburn, MA. And there was an awesome one in Vero Beach, Fl that I cant recall the name of. Best times of my life.

    1. I was horribly saddened when I learned that they'd torn down the Rocketland playground. So many memories and pressure-treated-wood-staples, now gone. :(

To add insult to injury, they replaced it with a standardized plastic-and-metal jungle gym that isn't anything CLOSE to the original. Kids these days don't know what they're missing.

    2. I their defense, while rocketland was the best (I went there frequently myself as a kid), It was nearly impossible to maintain. All the tunnels and the even ground made it impossible to get to the underlying supports, and by the time I was playing there in the late 90's/early 00's it was really starting to show some wear and age.

It would be nice to see auburn rebuild rocket land out of some sturdier materials and with a more worker friendly design, but that seems unlikely since playgrounds in general get a lot less use than even 10 years ago.

    2. It's Rocket Land in Auburn, MA. It was torn down and replaced in the early 2000s. The Pressure Treated wood it was made out of was deemed unsafe.... I grew up playing on this playground. It was very sad when it was torn down. Funny I can still remember the feeling of loss I had the day my mother pulled up and the playground was completely different

  3. Obtaining cat household furniture could be a confusing and maybe formiddable encounter. Absolutely nothing is far more aggravating when compared with to create an incredible cat tree only to get your current pet cats completely disregard it! I've possessed pet cats just about all playing, as well as in the following paragraphs I'm going to attempt to discuss a few of my own know-how as well as understanding to you that helps make your decision a lttle bit less complicated.
