January 2014 Self-Portrait: Memory Making

This year, I've decided to embark on a monthly self-portrait project inspired by Indiana-based photographer Gail Werner. Every month, I'll conceptualize, photograph and post a self-portrait here, along with a written entry about why that specific portrait is significant to me.

I became a portrait photographer because there's nothing I enjoy more than taking pictures of people. There is so much creative satisfaction in figuring out who a person is in a particular moment and then snapping a portrait that encapsulates those qualities.

I'm already cheating with this one, as 1). It wasn't taken in January, and 2). It wasn't taken by me. Oh well. Let's call flexibility on the rules for this project. Tiho took this in December (close enough) at the intimate wedding ceremony we were shooting for two close friends. I chose it because I think it does a terrific job of conveying who I am at this point in time. There have been moments when I've felt absolutely zany from the craziness of my schedule this past year. Sometimes I laugh and sometimes I cry, but at the heart of it, I am grateful for the chance to make a living doing something so fun and for learning something new every step of the way.
