Crazytown



Whoa Nellie, it's not even 8:00 AM and this day is crazytown. It started in the shower at approximately 5:14 AM, when I was minding my own business, sudsing up with my coconut shampoo. I heard a creak outside and then another and then all of a sudden, whooosh!, shower curtain flung wide open and there's Tiho with sleepy eyes, a sheepish smile and a big "hello!" I screamed so loud, I'm sure the neighbors heard it. His intention wasn't to scare me, which made the situation all the more hilarious. Simply an early morning pee three hours ahead of schedule and excitement to find me still in the house. Oy.

It got crazier with my walk to the train in the heart of the most torrential thunderstorm I've experienced in years. Lightening illuminating the whole sky, rain so heavy and fast it shot sideways and thunderclaps so boom boom booming, I was sure I was about to die. Two cars passing, with windows rolled down and offers for a lift to the station. Strange men, thank you very much, but no thanks, I'd rather take my chances with the electricity and the tip of my umbrella.

I finished reading a really good but really bizarre book on my commute and am feeling like there's a full moon tonight even though I know there isn't. I just opened my notebook to jot down a few things and realized the most crazytown thing of all: in twelve days we leave for our two-and-a-half-week-long trip to Europe and I haven't done a single thing besides book our Paris apartment.

So, with wishes for a happy weekend, I beg of you to leave some insight on things to do in Paris, France and Prague, Czech Republic. Tiho has Bulgaria covered.

    Oh God, we were awaken by the thunders last night too and I usually sleep through ANYTHING weather related. Even through our black curtains, I had the feeling someone is pointing a flashlight in my eyes AND roaring in my ear at the same time. Didn't see that coming! It's horrible you had to be outside in such a weather! Reminds me of that one time in Ramapo when a friend of mine and I decided it's a splendid idea to go to the gym while thunderstorming and were literary screaming and bouncing and praying while running with a huge umbrella with (smartly) a giant metal tip. Oh those days!

    what an amazing post! seriously, it made me smile.

    on paris recs, you MUST visit les puces de saint-ouen flea market, have hot chocolate at la duree (I know they're famous for macaroons, but their hot chocolate is where it's at. for real.), have dinner (specifically the french onion soup, steak & frites, beet salad and chocolate dessert) at Brasserie Balzar (http://www.brasseriebalzar.com/) and lunch at Restaurant Chartier (http://www.restaurant-chartier.com). please please promise to follow these recommendations as they. are. AMAZING (and truly parisian).

    also, if you're at all inclined, read "Lunch in Paris" by Elizabeth Bard (http://www.amazon.com/Lunch-Paris-Love-Story-Recipes/dp/031604279X) while you're there. a fast read written by a smitten american-turned-parisian, I'm not exaggerating when I say that this book had a large part in making my trip so great. it felt a bit magical somehow, which I think you'd appreciate.

    Paris and Prague? ooh la la! Both beautiful cities. I know nothing about Bulgaria so I'm looking forward to seeing your blogging about that.

    @ Kimberly, thank you so much for all of the recs! I am for sure going to Lauderee (I feel like I'd be a Paris failure if I didn't, ha). I will try my best to check out all of those restaurants, too. I actually own Elizabeth Bard's book and it is indeed amazing and magical.

    Your random post made for a very good read this Saturday a.m. What a wacky day! I'm surprised you were still able to finish the book despite the weather, the commotion, the strange cars with somewhat strange men.

    I'm glad you're home safe and now thinking about your upcoming trip. Regardless of what you guys do or see, I'm so sure you'll have the best time!

    I'm so wishing I had done my Paris and Prague posts by now! In Paris, I suggest eating a baguette, (at least one... two) pain au chocolates, grapes, wine, gelato, and crepes of course! I suggest visiting the Musee d'Orsay, Sacre de Coeur in Monmarte, and the highest level on the Eiffel Tower! Mmmm.. what else? Just enjoy it.. you'll love it, who wouldn't?! It's Paris! I never had an obsession with it until I visited and now I dream of going back. Three days wasn't nearly enough.

    In Prague, I really loved the old town (didn't even venture into the new town), Charles Bridge (which I learned from overhearing a tour guide is held together by EGGS! Which.. if you get a chance, a free tour like the one I overheard lead by an American guy who loved Prague so much he stayed there and now gives tours for a company, well.. I'd recommend one of those since you learn so much interesting facts), definitely go to the Senate gardens to see an amazing wall you're sure to love! And that's all I can really think of at the moment - and I was only there for about 3 hours! The only thing I regret not going to is the Dancing House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_House). I was only able to drive by it, but I was so fascinated, I took tons of photos from the car and looked it up as soon as I got home!

    Phew... I hope that wasn't too much/confusing. Feel free to ask me questions about any of it and I would be more than happy to answer!

    Mostly, have fun, be spontaneous, and take lots of photos to show us when you get back! : )
