Reading Room

Lately, I've been fantasizing about redoing our little home "office" into a cozy reading room. Currently, it serves more as our house's dumping ground and I'd really love to get rid of the over-sized desk, bulky office chair and cheap organizational shelving. It is the one room in the house I dislike and I'm fairly certain it's because it lacks both prettiness and cohesiveness. I rarely venture past the doorway and Tiho mostly uses it to play video games on the desktop computer. Ideally, we'd make it more of a sitting room with a smaller desk/table nestled in to preserve a space to work.

This transformation is definitely going to take some time and knowing me, probably won't even begin to transpire until well into 2011. For now, I'm just enjoying the process of collecting inspiration.

  1. Ooh, I would love to have a cozy reading room! Even though interior design is my profession, I take forever to make decisions for myself. ;)

  2. My dream has always been to have a bright, cozy room in the house that I can turn into a reading/crafts spot, with lots of textures and absolutely NO screens :) I'm by no means a designer but if I needed to decorate such a place, I'd go for a pastel orange or lavender wall color, lots of lamps, a wall of shelves, a cozy recliner (or my all-time favorite papasan) and some scented candles.
There is definitely plenty of inspiration out there. Let us know the progress and/or post some pictures!

  3. I say keep the inspiration coming! In our bedroom I have a modern-style rocking chair that I was given for my 21st birthday. I've recently cosy-ied (not a word, but hey ho I just made it a word) it up for winter with a luxe throw. It's become the perfect reading nook!

  4. Every time I see a photo where they've extended the bookshelves across the doorway I turn green with envy. And start measuring and plotting a way to make that happen in our office (it will not be happening without a carpenter of some sort, that much I have figured out).
I do wish I had a nice place to sit and read in the office, we also currently only have the office chair and that just won't do.

  5. I'm right there with you-our office has John's ENORMOUS desk (we had a move in into the room in pieces so it would fit), his ENORMOUS match desk chair (the furniture is designed for giants) and a huge filing cabinet, which is usually empty. But I know he'd rather die than give up his man cave!
