You know what I like? Things that make my life easier. I ordered instagram prints from Postalpix, an awesome app that delivers photos from your iPhone directly to your doorstep. We don't own a high quality printer, and I never seem to find the time to upload my photos to a jump drive in order to take them to an outside printing source. But now? I have a box filled with some favorite snapshots that I can admire and stroke and get a little hot and bothered by and I didn't have to do a thing besides tap my phone screen. Bonus? The 5x5 print dimensions fit perfectly into a pretty gold frame I had on hand. I've been rotating the photos until I figure out what to do with them all.

Tiho and I drove to Boston right after work on Friday to spend twenty-four hours with my dad and grandparents. We woke up to a six-inch blanket of snow on Saturday morning, which made the day feel extra cozy and special. Winter finally came.

I spent most of my Saturday stalking a cardinal on the bird feeder hanging just outside of my grandmother's dining room window. Mesmerizing! I also ate a lot of chocolate chip cookies and drank tea out of a speckled floral mug.

My mom is back in the states for a couple of weeks, so my sister trekked out to our place for a visit on Sunday afternoon. It's been a weekend filled with family, nature and a healthy dose of nostalgia.

Feels good.

Vera Neumann is my idol. Have I ever mentioned I'm an avid collector of her textiles? Cloth napkins are my weakness, and you can frequently find me browsing Etsy, Ebay and flea markets for her iconic silk scarves. I like to believe we would have been friends. Recently, I've taken to spending the last fifteen minutes or so before bed leafing through this gorgeous book. I haven't any proof, but I'm fairly certain doing so makes my dreams brighter.

Food. Art. Not much of anything else.

I was battling a cold this weekend (feels like it's on its way out, yippee!) so most of my time was spent recuperating around the house, save for a delicious taco dinner at my cousin's Lower East Side apartment on Friday night and a friend's chocolate tasting birthday party on Saturday afternoon. I am so grateful to have had Monday off to catch up on rest, which is exactly what I did.

I finally got around to hanging/rearranging new art and baking a batch of cinnamon rolls. Early last week, I caught a whiff of one on the train and practically went into convulsions with a visceral craving. Proud to say that between the two of us, T and I polished off that entire plate on Sunday morning. Not more than three hours later, a tray full of Mexican take-out turned us into bona-fide gluttons. It was also a weekend of indulgent television (Miss America pageant! Golden Globes! House Hunters marathon!). Tiho retaliated with two afternoons of nonstop NFL. (Hence, a golden opportunity to rearrange the art).

I'm feeling as ready as I can for the week ahead. This NY Times article about what matters in the end made me smile. Give it a glance if you have a few minutes: quality read.

P.S. That Matisse script is from one of my art books. I'm thinking of framing copies of those two pages. So beautiful.

Beautiful Line has a wonderful collection of reasonably-priced vintage brass figurines (plus a plethora of other neat loot). Last month, I gave my sister a turtle dish identical to the one pictured and received the loveliest pair of swans from Tiho (both gifts were purchased from this shop). I really like that cute little strawberry box. And hello gorgeous and majestic giraffe.

For the Love of Paperwhites

My paperwhites bloomed, and I am in awe. I potted the bulbs myself; diligently watering and patting the soil every day, and crossing my fingers for extra luck. Two weeks later, and here they are! A first for me. I'd like to grow more floral and plant varieties now: there's something tremendously satisfying about nurturing something into existence.

On weekend mornings, when I walk into my kitchen and see the light dance across the table, it's not unlikely that I'll pause and daydream for awhile. While walking to the train after work on Friday, I looked up and saw the top of the buildings on 33rd and 7th glowing a glorious golden hue as the sun began its descent. In the moment, I wondered if anyone else spotted it too. So often we're all rushing from one place to the next, caught up in our own heads, and subsequently failing to notice or appreciate our surroundings. I'm trying to be better about it.

I yearned for quiet this weekend. I mostly cooked and read and wrote. A few long walks outside in the gorgeous, Spring-like weather made me positively giddy. I skipped alongside Tiho as we wandered from the local toy shop to the grocery store and finally, the bakery, for a cup of coffee. I candidly set the following professional goal for myself: in three years time, I want to be sustainably self-employed. I don't always possess the confidence or discipline I know is necessary to make this happen. Also trying to be better about that.

It was 12 degrees and pitch black when I left for work yesterday. My hot pink trapper hat helped to keep the sting at bay, but the reality of it is, January in New York isn't all that fun.

Impossibly juicy citrus, sparkling blue skies and steadily persistent gold-potted plants remind me that even in the heart of winter's brutality, there's always, always a chance for warmth and life.

I've been snapping a lot of photos of myself in the mirror. That sounds so self-indulgent, but what I'm attempting to do is strengthen my ability to take portraits. This photo is obviously unfocused, which irrationally annoys me. (Let go, Kayla).

Even though I opted out of any real resolutions, my one steadfast (and ongoing) goal for the new year is continuous growth and development in my photography skills. I've spent the past several months getting to know my camera, messing around with settings, and capturing my surroundings to share here. I want to take a class, or maybe even attend a workshop, and eventually invest in a new lens. I received a Holga 35mm film camera for Christmas. I'm excited to give that a go as well.

Unrelated but somehow connected, I feel compelled to share music today. These are a few songs in constant rotation around here; classics I'm sure all of you are already familiar with. I love how they make me feel, especially at full volume on Sunday mornings.

Back to the grind this week. Something I read in the December issue of Whole Living a few weeks back struck a powerful chord with me. In an article entitled "The Gift of the Tao," writer Andrew Leonard offered the following bit of wisdom: "Typically, the New Year is marked by grand resolutions, but I throw all that out. There will be no unrealistic goal-setting...I cast about for something small, something simply pleasurable rather than a mighty quest."

"Simply pleasurable." I'm on board with that.

In January, I flew to Buffalo to attend the wintry wedding of my college roommate, waxed poetic over childhood dreams, spent a lot of time doodling and enjoyed a girl's weekend with my two closest female friends.

In February, I fixated on Swedish interiors, practiced staying wonky, saved up for and purchased my beloved Nikon, celebrated Valentine's Day with an indoor French picnic, and published my first (and last) style post.

In March, I splurged on my now favorite piece of art, connected with my New England roots on a weekend trip to Westport, pondered the point of blogging, wandered Manhattan with my camera, proclaimed my enthusiasm for everything and shared five interesting facts about myself.

In April, I completed my thesis with the help of coffee, accepted a new teaching position for the upcoming school year, saw my sister perform in her leading role at Ithaca, and debuted Exquisite Banana Junior.

In May, I was moved by the beautiful paintings of E.E. Cummings, treasured plentiful time with friends including a Kentucky Derby party, declared my undying love for Spring, baked a favorite dessert, met Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, cheered for Emma as she graduated from college, survived a bee infestation in our house, and said farewell to three years of graduate school with the acquisition of my Master's degree.

In June, I spent significant time outside, witnessed the most amazing sunset on the tennis court, lamented a particularly emotional goodbye with my students, attended the wedding of Tiho's colleague, shared my thoughts on picture-taking, succumbed to Summer's glorious freedom, prepared for our European vacation, and made a rainbow painting for one of you.

In July, I got engaged(!) in the gardens at Versailles, fell in love with Paris, froze in magical Prague, and gallivanted across the entirety of Bulgaria.

In August, I spent an afternoon at Stone Barns Farm, celebrated a special anniversary, reveled in downtime, thoroughly appreciated a weekend get-a-way to our cottage in Cape Cod, said farewell to my mom as she departed on a year-long trip to China, and sustained Hurricane Irene.

In September, I turned twenty-five, spent labor day at the lake, returned to the Cape to visit wedding venues for our second celebration in 2013, adjusted to the craziness of a new school year, went apple picking, and eloped at city hall!

In October, my love turned twenty-six, we goofed off in a photo booth, I embraced fall, struggled to find balance, and experienced seriously wacky weather.

In November, I fell prey to the stunning colors of Autumn in New York, reached the semi-finals in an online publishing contest, and expressed my Thanksgiving gratitude in the form of a poem.

In December, it was all things festive, all of the time. There was significant sparkle and light, culminating in a glorious and restful holiday break.

I'm not sure I'll ever have a year quite like this one again (traversing Europe! getting engaged AND married! starting a new job!). I'm sorry to say goodbye to such a beautiful twelve months, but excited for the potential of 2012. Here's to contentment and serenity for us all.

Pictures convey the bulk of my diet while on break. I remembered to eat some yogurt and fruit for breakfast yesterday but then countered it with a huge bowl of buttered noodles for dinner. Oh yes.

I love food so much. Especially fancy coffee and sweet treats. Feeling mighty glad the current season serves as a masterful enabler. Plus, my french press feels loved again now that I'm not racing out of the house at 6:00 AM.

I am searching for a high-end but moderately priced classic tea kettle, as I'm so over our cheap grimy red one. I really like this English-made copper fellow, but $100 is more than I'm willing to pay right now. This stainless steel and copper-bottomed beauty is more up my alley with its $50 price tag. And then there's the model that every coffee/tea snob claims superior to all others. I should probably listen to them and nab it, right? $60.

But wait. How do I resist this petite demi kettle by Le Creuset? ($70). With six happy colors to choose from, I'm not even sure making a selection is possible! Help?

It is Sunday. I am watching the daylight rapidly fade into darkness while listening to the Nutcracker Suite. A day of hustle and bustle, bustle and hustle: groceries, chores, contemplation. Tonight, we're filling gigantic mugs with hot cocoa and strolling into town to catch a 3D viewing of Hugo. I can't wait!

Scenes From The Weekend

This weekend was simple and indulgent: I never changed out of pajamas on Sunday and loved every second of it. On Saturday, we woke up early to drive upstate to visit with my Nana for the day. She was chatty and chipper, which reminded me how special grandparents are, and how lucky I am to have them. We returned late and managed to squeeze in a few errands along the way, so we could enjoy Sunday free from any sort of chores or obligation. I scored big at Michael's (sparkly everything--and cinnamon pinecones!--mostly for projects with the kiddos this week). Sunday was characterized by ginger snaps and holiday gift shopping from the comfort of my bed. The house is so warm and Christmas-y right now. December, you pretty thing, you.

The Day We Said " I Do"

September 29, 2011. The day I looked into the big, beautiful brown eyes of my love and promised to be his wife. I wore red shoes.

We eloped at city hall in Manhattan for a variety of reasons, mostly related to visa time lines and finances. It was a wonderful day.

Emma was our witness and my hair and makeup fixer. At our second wedding celebration (in 2013), she'll be my maid of honor, too. I love her.

I wore a yellow silk rose in my hair in honor of Bulgaria and a short white lace dress found in a small boutique near my house. The dress had no tags except for a tiny label on the inseam stating, "Made in Paris." It seemed serendipitous.

When we were called in to the chapel, a lot of giggling ensued. Nervous energy maybe? It was all kind of surreal. But then the officiant started talking and I clutched Tiho's hands too tightly and forgot about everything else. What I remember most is the way he looked at me. I could see the raw emotion in his face and it just completely reaffirmed that this was exactly what was supposed to happen. Husband, wife, here we are.

We walked out of that building beaming. I couldn't stop smiling. I've been told that no matter what, you feel beautiful on your wedding day. I have to agree. It radiates from within.

Newly minted sister and brother. It's amazing to me how a marriage instantly expands the notion of family. I love it.

We took a handful of portraits in the wedding garden and then in front of the municipal building and courthouse.

See? I can't stop smiling. And doesn't Tiho look dapper in his cherry red tie? The color of passion, baby!

We had our hearts set on a series of Brooklyn Bridge photos. One of our earliest dates was a stroll across that bridge, so it was majorly sentimental (plus it's just awesome).

As we set out, the storm clouds rolled in. We were about a third of the way over the bridge when the loudest clap of thunder boomed overhead and the sky opened. When I say "opened," I mean crazy heavy rain and wind.

There was nothing we could do. No umbrellas, no shelter. So, we majorly made out and embraced the photo opportunity. We wanted a Brooklyn Bridge photo shoot and boy, did we ever get one.

After a few minutes, I kicked off my heels and we raced back over the bridge in search of cover. It was still pouring and absolutely freezing. We were drenched and I'm fairly certain my dress was see-through.

We made out some more and shared a hot dog from a vendor before deciding to call it a day. Originally, we planned to remain in the city and treat ourselves to a romantic dinner, but in the end, we headed home, ordered Thai takeout, popped the cork on a bottle of champagne and snuggled on the couch. And you know what? It felt exactly as it should.

I love you so much, Tiho. If these first few months of marriage are any indication of what the next seventy years will be, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

Happy happy weekend wishes to you. It's going to be a working one for me, but if I buckle down and get it all done (torture), we're going to the Chocolate World Expo on Sunday (worth it).

Oh, and we also need to buy a Christmas tree. I feel like I'm so behind: can't wait to bust out the ornaments and my beloved nutcrackers. I am thoroughly enjoying the elf with the tuba who serenades me with "Frosty the Snowman" every morning at Penn Station. New York City is the absolute best this time of year.

A Wish List

On a rainy couch-ridden afternoon a few weeks back, I discovered the curated online shop Twine. The shop has been in existence for a couple of years already but continuously debuts new merchandise "in the interest of finding more value in less stuff." They provide a rotating collection of 100 objects, all of which fall under the categories of "honest, well made, beautiful and useful."

This was one of the first weekends in a long time where I was out and moving for most of it. Tiho and I dragged ourselves out of bed at 7 AM on Saturday in order to head into the city to see Emma's new apartment. She scored the deal of the century on a charming three bedroom (shared with two roommates) on at tree-lined street two blocks from the subway in upper Manhattan. We presented her with our housewarming gift (a coffee maker!) before venturing back out in search of brunch.

I found myself with a couple of hours to kill before meeting a former student for a playdate, so I decided to walk across central park, where blue skies, golden leaves and the most overwhelming sense of gratitude for New York City consumed me. Recently, it's been somewhat of a tumultuous relationship between this city and I, but at 2:00 in the afternoon on one of Autumn's most beautiful days, it was difficult to feel anything but unbridled appreciation.

After a joyous reunion with a very special four-year-old, I raced home to freshen up and then, on the arm of my love, attended a small dinner party where we feasted on lasagna and cherry pie while fussing over our friend's brand new rescue puppy. Sunday involved Thanksgiving-related errands, Nat King Cole on repeat and a few household projects and chores.

Now, it's two days of work and then...family and feasting! I can almost smell the stuffing...

Long Beach Island

On Friday night, we drove down to Long Beach Island to spend the weekend at a rented vacation home with some friends (we were guests). I wasn't feeling 100%, although the laid-back tenure of the weekend's plans allowed for plenty of rest and relaxation. At the conclusion of two days almost exclusively characterized by napping, board game playing, movie watching and chicken-noodle soup eating, T and I took a few minutes to walk along the water's edge. While the salty air and gentle lapping of the waves certainly helped to calm some of my restlessness, upon our departure, I couldn't deny the familiar ache for more precious time with the sea. We've been talking a lot about our future and a move/lifestyle change just might be on the horizon. Time will tell.

Also, this article touched me tremendously. Something to think about.

I'm attempting to shake up my routine by showering at night in order to carve out an extra fifteen minutes in the morning so I can drink my coffee in my living room instead of on the train. Or style my hair. Or watch the news. Or press the snooze button. Man, I really love the snooze button.

What's your [weekday] morning routine? If you tell me you sleep in past 8 and spend an hour in bed luxuriously reading the paper, I pretty much think your life is perfect.

Everyday Resplendence

Back in August, I made a small book highlighting some of my favorite instagram photos on blurb.com. It only cost me $10 + shipping. So often, it seems as though the photographs I snap vanish into the oblivion of my hard drive; safe, but forgotten. It's one of my reasons for maintaining this blog; to preserve, yes, but also to revisit and reminisce. This 7x7 photo journal now sits on my coffee table offering a tactile bundle of memories. I plan to make at least one a season from here on out.

Below, a selection of pages. The title came to me spontaneously while formatting the layout. It conveys exactly what I strive to capture, both in my photos and my writing. Enjoy.

Scenes From The Weekend

Bread-making, wine-drinking, and warm apple-turnovers. A jewel-toned bouquet from the local flower studio. Peppermint tea with spoonfuls of honey. A freshly-scrubbed home smelling of cranberry and clove.

It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I awoke to golden sunbeams on my pillowcase and breathed in crisp morning air on a walk to the bagel store. We collected fallen leaves in a brown paper bag for my students to make pressings and collages tomorrow. I've been writing again and making serious plans to do it more often. I submitted a manuscript for publication review last week. I'm both terrified and thrilled that it's finally released into the world.

For now, I'm going to enjoy what's left of the weekend, and the daylight. But first, another slice of bread. Gotta finish one loaf before I can bake another.

Back to Basics

I've been thinking about technology lately. Specifically, the never-ending internal battle that rages over "how much is too much." Do you sometimes look at the clock and realize you've been on the computer for five straight hours? Do you fear that your children won't feel as excited as you remember feeling about owning your first library card? I do.

On the other hand, the advances in the field of technology amaze me. Look how far our world has come. The other night, I video-skyped with my mom in China...from my phone. Every day, I am able to share my stories and photos with hundreds of people from around the globe in this space. If a wrong turn is made while driving, I can redirect the route on the GPS in approximately 10 seconds. Life offers more complexity now, but also more accessibility. Is that such a bad thing?

I'm never quite sure how to strike an appropriate balance relative to both my consumption of technology and my thoughts about it. Our world is changing. It's going to keep changing. Shouldn't we embrace that? And yet, there's always that little voice telling me to leave it. Let it go for awhile. Unplug. Do it the old-fashioned way.

Scenes From The Weekend

This weekend took us to the twilight zone and back. We lost all electricity and heat due to Saturday's snow storm: yes, as I'm sure you've heard, the northeast experienced a fairly colossal October snow fall. That's just bananas. The heavy winds and 6 inches of snow caused numerous tree branches to fall down and naturally, all of the main power lines in our county.

It was a more than a little mind-boggling to go from this...

...to that (and in a matter of hours). I felt (still feel) badly for the trees. The beautiful colors of autumn were prematurely snuffed out. How rude.

We combated the chilliness with a serendipitous bottle of Pinot Noir (note the label) and plenty of blankets. We also kept the oven on long after the chicken was finished roasting in order to stay toasty. We were only without heat/power for 24 hours, which was long enough to convince me that I'd make a terrible pilgrim.

The portion of the weekend falling before the storm was actually quite lovely. I met up with Alice after work on Friday to pick up a few of our wedding prints (yippee!). Afterward, Emma and I enjoyed a sister date in Union Square, complete with a delicious dinner at Max Brenner, a bit of shoe shopping and a viewing of Like Crazy (a really well-acted film with a powerful and highly relative storyline). Tiho and I cashed in a gift card on Saturday, allowing me to indulge a craving for creamy broccoli cheddar soup in a sourdough bread bowl.

When the power switched back on late Sunday afternoon, we celebrated by making coffee and doing five loads of laundry. I had big plans to vacuum/dust the whole house, but the lack of electricity kinda tossed those plans out the window and by Sunday evening, I surrendered to a few days more of messy home living.

And there I go talking about my vacuum again. I'll take that as a sign to say toodle-loo for now! Oh yeah, and Happy Halloween. I'm wearing a creamsicle-colored hoodie today, which is as far as my festiveness stretches this year. What can I say, I started devouring candy corn weeks ago. My sights are already set on Thanksgiving.

Over the weekend, I was propelled into what felt like a state of wonder when I became acquainted with Becca Stadtlander's beautiful portfolio after spotting a glimpse on Le Projet D'Amour. While browsing her work, I felt a familiar honey-like warmth spread through my veins. Every single one of her paintings immediately flings me into the middle of some sort of story or conversation. They fascinate me in a way that can only be described as thrilling. I thought I'd pass along her portfolio/shop/blog to all of you lovely people, so you too, can share in the experience.

The weekend according to my second pair of eyes, Monsieur iphone:

Post-work pit stop at my favorite bakery for a mocha latte and a bag of sweets; Saturday afternoon indulgence at (where else?) Ikea. So greasy, so good.

The scarf I'll live in for the next several months; and surprise!--requisite stripes. I'm so predictable.

Giant pumpkin macaron (from the aforementioned bakery); late night snuggling & movie-watching.

Plate of leftover macarons at midnight (now we've officially pegged me as a cliché); newly purchased bathroom rug. It was a $20 impulse buy at Ikea, but we're both in awe of how it completely upgrades the space. Wish it came in giant size for the living room.

Famer's market carrots are better than all supermarket carrots; And obviously, so is farmer's market artisan bread. Note my "hell yes" face as I haul the loot home.

Clown pumpkin in pink plastic cheetah print; A lesson in observance (more on that soon).

Sunday funday means leisurely snacking by utilizing the oft-neglected teapot and china. Because, when else do I bust it out?

Not pictured: amazing animal puppets nabbed for $3.99 at Ikea; foliage walks around the neighborhood; a particularly chilly Saturday night outing for hot cider; home-cooked candlelit dinner for two; skype date with in-laws; blog browsing; slow-roasted brussels sprouts* and ginormous pasta bowls.

A good one indeed. Now, bring it, Monday! How are all of you fine human beings feeling today?

*I googled the proper spelling of "brussels sprouts," because spell check kept saying that "brussel sprouts" was wrong. Turns out, you need that extra "s" on "brussel." Hello random?

Scenes From The Weekend

We mostly lazed about this weekend. A weird mood struck on Friday night resulting in a long, hard cry followed by a long, hard sleep. But damn, it felt good. On Saturday we woke with only an hour left of the morning and ventured to our favorite brunch haunt for a little something hot and a little something sweet. Hit the spot.

Closets were organized, groceries purchased, Mad Men season 1 concluded (I know, where have we been?). As the sunlight tapered off, we fixed a bread & cheese plate and ate it from a tray in bed. Man, I love Saturdays.

On Sunday morning, we walked the long way to the farmer's market. I felt nostalgic for the season even though it's still in full swing. Only two more weeks until Halloween, less than six until Thanksgiving, ten until Christmas. I feel like I've been living for my weekends lately, which worries me. The work week is always so busy and I'm struggling to find balance. One day at a time.

How are things in your neck of the woods? I'm aiming for a solid seven hours of sleep each night. A small but worthy victory if successful.

Present and in Awe

Pink pink pink pink. I'm all about pink lately. Thought I was beyond it, but nope. Everywhere I turn, my eyes frantically dart to the pink.

And this candle I picked up on Saturday? The one with the most deliciously perfect scent in the entire universe? This is not an exaggeration, guys. I am a very tough critic when it comes to scents. Add in the pretty packaging, and suddenly the $12.95 seems like chump change.

I mustn't forget my beloved orzo salad. I can't believe I haven't shared this recipe yet. It's simple. A pound of orzo, a cup & a half of (fresh) feta, a bag of dried cranberries, a cutting board worth of chopped basil & wild arugula, a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and the juice of two lemons. Mix it all together, season with salt & pepper, and serve at room temperature. I've eaten a bowl every day for the past four days. You will too if you decide to make it. Promise.

Ah, ciderfest. I've invented a new word: ciderific. Because cider is just that. Especially cider made from apples collected in buckets and then run through a 100-year-old wooden press. There was conversation and laughter, puppies and beer. Babies, trees, a potluck picnic, and leaves the color of fire. Fire leaves! It was all very ciderific.

See? Fire leaves. My camera lens almost melted from those colors.

Lately, I can't seem to satiate my craving for unscheduled down time, preferably in or around my home. Books, sunlit windows, walkable neighborhood errands, dancing with my husband, dinner with friends, jars of tulips, new leather shoes, letter writing in the coffee shop--these familiar comforts--they're all I seek.

Happy Things to End the Week

The week slipped away from me (again) so I'm signing off for the weekend with the offer of a smile, a yellow pompom hat and a cheery striped clutch.

We're attending Ciderfest at our friend's private farm on Sunday which should make for a fun outing in what looks to be an otherwise lazy long weekend. Hallelujah!--just what the doctor ordered.

Enjoy yourselves, my dumpling muffins. (Try to picture that for a second. Mumpling? Duffin? I don't even know).

Flowers, Diamonds, Sheep

That's what I have for you today. A glimpse at my DIY bridal bouquet composed of sunflowers, roses, dahlias and hypericum--fall's finest, eh? (More like "fall's only"--no joke, there was nothing else available besides droopy looking carnations and some unidentifiable green stuff). I purchased all of the flowers from our local Whole Foods the night before we headed to city hall and then arranged them at the kitchen table. I was pleased with how the finished product turned out, considering I've never made a real bouquet before. I wanted a natural looking, somewhat asymmetrical feel and think I achieved that. I didn't know I was supposed to use floral tape (oops), and instead, secured it with tight fabric ribbon (several layers tightly wrapped and then knotted & tucked). The bouquet more than withstood the torrential downpour, so I guess I did something right.

Snapped these instagram shots once we returned home and dried off. We changed into pajammies and shared an entire bottle of French champagne. My wedding band isn't an official match to my engagement ring, but I think they complement each other nicely. I wanted a whisper of a ring that could stand out on its own. This photo duo makes me smile. Pure happiness right there.

And last, the adorable farm store and petting zoo we stumbled upon whilst driving home from our movie date. I spotted a sign that read "Cinderella pumpkins" and made Tiho pull over. I might have clapped my hands together and performed a little jig when we walked around back and encountered two goats, a sheep, a (gigantic) pig and several bunnies. I fed them pellets and then bought a caseload of gourds for my classroom. The photo with the vacuum transpired in Sears, which was the original reason we detoured and subsequently found the farm stand. Our floors are in desperate need of a cleaning because our current vacuum picks up approximately one out of every ten dust particles. Not that you really care about our vacuum, or the state of our floors. Focus on the lamb. Or the perfectly arranged pumpkins. I was impressed too.

Four days. That's how long we've been married and I still can't quite believe it. So much to share, but I'm going to wait for the photos. Our photographer shot a significant portion on film, which I'm psyched to see.

Ours was a long weekend, due to our Thursday nuptial festivities. We slept in on Friday and took ourselves out to brunch at our favorite local cafe, where we stuffed ourselves silly with savory crepes, cappuccino, pain au chocolat, and freshly-squeezed orange juice. The afternoon found us at the cinema for a midday movie date followed by an impromptu stop at a nearby farm store and tiny petting zoo. Dinner was a truly gluttonous occasion: we utilized a gift certificate to a snazzy Mediterranean restaurant in town and walked home with our jeans unbuttoned.

My sister officially moved into her own apartment on Saturday, so Tiho drove a carload full of boxes into Manhattan and helped her haul them up four flights of stairs. A good man I married. I baked and lounged around for the majority of the day before we headed to a spectacular evening wedding of two friends. We ate and drank until we felt sick, then danced the night away when we weren't hamming it up in the photo booth (which is kind of the best thing ever).

Sunday came, and with it; chores, work, football, groceries. A walk to the bookstore and a pause for caramel apple cider in the park.

It is October. Things should slow down to a more manageable pace now. I feel like I can breathe again.

Sunday is For Roses

Sunday, Sunday. Another week behind us. Or is it another ahead? I can't ever decide if Sunday marks the end or the beginning of the weekly calendar. We attended a wedding last night where roses were symbolically incorporated into the ceremony. While browsing Etsy this morning, I noticed how my most recent bookmarked items were rose-related. You all know my love for roses. Alas, today, we'll celebrate the rose. Happy Sunday, friends. I hope the lingering remnants of your weekend are lovely.

We Did It!

We're married! Here's a sneak peek from our city hall wedding yesterday. Our amazing photographer, Alice Gao, made this gif right after we all got caught in a monsoon--sans umbrellas--on the Brooklyn Bridge. My hair was sopping, my dress was drenched, and all we could do was laugh.

And dance. Because that's what love is really about, right?

What Dreams Are Made Of

I look forward to our annual trip to the apple orchard more than almost anything else in life. Every year, I temporarily convince myself that I'd love to own and operate an apple farm of my own, if only for the promise of unlimited mulled cider and a true bounty worth of seasonal fruit.

After an afternoon of walking, climbing, picking and hauling, I am reminded that I don't really love dirt, sweat or any form of manual labor for more than a few hours at a time. A lousy farmer I would make.

It's one of those dreams that percolates. When I picture the life I hope to build for my family, I imagine my children running barefoot through wildflower fields. I want them to recognize and appreciate the transcendent taste of a freshly-plucked September apple.

I don't know where we'll end up or the environment in which we'll raise our children. But, I know that we create the lives we lead based on dreams that maturate inside our very core. With every autumnal visit to the orchard, I remember where my dreams begin. And that's something.

(This year, we went to Masker Orchards in Warwick, New York. Highly recommended if you enjoy breath-taking valley views, acre upon acre of tree variety, and a country store packed to the brim with every apple product imaginable).

Our weekend:

11 hours of sleep both nights. Generous helpings of coffee + tea + treats. Shopping for fall "necessity" items (aka new slippers) and last minute wedding needs (shoes for T, spanx for me). Dinner at my aunt and uncle's house. Romantic poetry-reading session.* Lesson-planning. Picnicking with friends at the apple orchard.

I attempted to write more descriptive and cogent sentences, but my brain decided that was far too much effort at 10:30 pm on Sunday evening.

For now, I wish you all a very happy Monday. It's a 3-day work week for me, which would be fabulous if there wasn't so much that needed to be squeezed in. A lot of you asked for clarification: we are indeed heading to city hall to get married in three days. As in, Thursday.

Autumn Spice & Priorities

Today, it is Autumn. The season of apple picking, leaf crunching, and cinnamon spice candles. I have the strangest feeling it's going to pass me by in the blink of an eye, so I'm making a concerted effort to slow down and savor every sip of hot cider and every crisp morning walk to the train station.

I currently have two "to-do lists" saved on my phone. The first contains the following:

School paperwork, meeting with financial adviser, doctor/dentist appointments, lesson/classroom planning, clean the house, update calendar, email catch-up.

(aka not-so-fun stuff)

There's several more little things on that list (I write everything down so I don't forget), but they were starting to make me anxious. So, I made a second list and titled it "fun to be had." Included there:

De Kooning exhibit at the MOMA, dinner plans with friends, haircut, the start of swing dance lessons, visit to apple orchard, new lipstick, a play date with former students, Sunday walks for library books and coffee, our city hall wedding(!)

My heart rate significantly decreased by creating that second list. Both lists contain important reminders about upcoming priorities. The items on the first don't seem quite as bad now that I've highlighted all of the good stuff, too.

I'm only a slightly embarrassed by this post. It's all, whoa--there's my face in three places and then...nothing else. I'm blaming my sinuses. I've been feeling all sorts of blah and yuck since Sunday night when I came down with a nasty little stinker of a cold. Unfortunately, it arrived at the most inopportune time ever, and I can't really take a day off unless the thermometer climbs above 99. So yeah. My eyes are red, my nose is clogged and my students think my voice sounds silly. Emergen-C for breakfast, Dayquil for lunch and whatever allows me to crawl into bed by 8 for dinner.

I've been wearing my (tired eye) glasses, which led to a strange moment on the train when I caught my reflection in the window and almost did a double take because I didn't recognize myself. Has this ever happened to you? It made me laugh, which made me cough, which made me sneeze. And then it was my stop, so I gulped a few breaths of fresh air before dragging my butt home for a date with the tissue box and a mug o' tea.

Scenes From The Weekend

We were away this weekend. A half hour into the drive on Friday, I realized my camera was still sitting on my desk at home. Thank goodness for the iPhone: it actually ended up feeling nice traveling lighter than usual.

Our wedding venue search was the purpose for this mini trip. I've spent the past month researching and narrowed it down to the three places we visited this weekend. Needless to say, we feel elated after seeing them in person. Now, decision time.

The two venues we're deciding between are both lovely and unique and afford us the opportunity to have a gorgeous garden ceremony followed by an indoor reception in somewhat of an "alternative" location. I know I probably sound vague, but I don't want to give anything away until we officially decide. Several of these photos offer a little peek.

With all of the craziness and sleep-depravity of the past couple of weeks, it felt completely restorative to get away for 48 hours and spend one-on-one time with T. At the end of the day, I know it doesn't even matter where and when and how this wedding occurs: I'm just happy to be marrying the love of my life.

Any tips for effective penny-pinching? We need to find a way to save the majority of our money without resorting to a pantry full of ramen noodles. Because, you know, we love our crab cakes and garlic shrimp (which we bought, prepared and devoured for dinner on Saturday night. Nothing better).

A Weekend in Varna

I had big plans for my Bulgaria photos. There's so much I want to share from our trip this summer. But, time is precious these days: I cannot believe two months have passed since we returned to the U.S.

Before another two slip by, I figure I should at least attempt to showcase this batch from our weekend in Varna. We visited Tiho's extended family there and I fell in love with the candy-colored buildings and turquoise sea.

The real highlight for me was the night we all went out to dinner at an authentic Bulgarian restaurant, complete with traditional Bulgarian folk dancers and fire walkers. I learned how to do "the horo" circle dance and ate like an absolute glutton.

Still kind of blows my mind that I gain European Union citizenship in a couple of weeks. All of this amazing culture becomes my own simply by signing my name at city hall. Crazy!

The White Dress

My sister bought me this book from the National Portrait Gallery in London last year. I've been poring over it recently (for obvious reasons), as it provides a fascinating (and gorgeous!) look at the history and tradition of the wedding dress.

320 pages worth of couture fashion inspiration.

It's hard for me to resist anything having to do with classic, old Hollywood glamour, and The White Dress offers an abundance. Plus, it looks really pretty on the coffee table.

Scenes From The Weekend

It's Sunday night and I should be in bed. But first, a glimmer of my weekend, because I somehow managed to pick up my camera once or twice..

A Friday evening stroll through the annual antique car show in town (see more photos from last year's event); a jam-packed Saturday of random errands, supply shopping, a late afternoon BBQ and a lively game night with new friends; Sunday morning reflection over the nation's heavyhearted anniversary; and putting my head down to work in preparation for the week ahead.

I had to laugh at the serendipity of the words in the topmost photo when I caught sight of them at the car show because of how apropos they are in describing my current mindset. I think I can almost make out the light at the end of the tunnel, though--a beacon of hope promising seven hours of sleep a night.

Hugs, my friends. I'm hoping to find rhythm again soon and with it, the time to catch up on all of my favorite reads. Thanks for understanding.

Oh! I cannot forget to mention my shock & delight at finding a surprise in the mail from the talented artist I recently blogged about. The generosity of this creative community astounds me.

Work, Eat, Sleep (Repeat)

This is where I've been this week. No children until next Wednesday, but between now and then, I face a zillion meetings, a butt load of paperwork, a parent orientation to plan and deliver, and a whole classroom to clean, organize and set up. The last two days proved pleasantly productive, as the space itself is nearly ready to go. My body's adjustment to the 5:30 AM alarm on the other hand...

Arriving home after 6:00 PM and logging another 3-4 hours of work before practically collapsing into bed doesn't help, but it is what it is.

This fall marks my fourth year teaching and I finally feel like I've achieved a solid groove with my preparation. However, I have two classes this year (AM and PM five days/week), with sixteen and thirteen children respectively. That's 29 families, people, with the potential for a handful more if enrollment increases. Plus, since I'm new to the school, I'm learning the ins and outs of the environment and culture along with all of them. Needless to say, my type-A-ness is in overdrive right now and probably will be for the rest of the month. ('Cause oh yeah, we're also getting married at the end of September. Gulp!).

I'll be around this space, but definitely not regularly unless I magically become wonder woman.

P.S. Before I forget, the point of this post was to show you the pint-sized, cherry-red lounge chairs I inherited. You can't see it too well, but I put a ladybug footstool in front of the chair on the left. Kind of amazing, if I do say so myself. Nothing more off the hook than a tricked out reading nook.

Leftovers

I like simple things: my birthday last week provided me with several. Flowers in my favorite colors, a thoughtful present, and an indulgent pedicure in the brightest shade of pink available.

Even better? They continue to spark a smile several days after they were presented to me. I'm excited for my students to see my toes. Nail polish instantly increases my cool factor, which is of the utmost importance when you're the one in charge of a room full of three-year-olds.

(These fudge-y cake pops didn't stick around long enough to be properly photographed, but boy, did they bring my stomach joy).

Romance, Adorned

The photography and styling are also worthy of praise. All of the shop photos remind me of a fairytale or a dream sequence in a ballet; pleasing to the eye, and the imagination.

The Language of the Lake

We spent Friday through Sunday in a rustic cabin on Lake George in upstate New York where Tiho served as a groomsman in the casual afternoon wedding of his former roommate. On the eve before the festivities, he went out for a drink with the groom and other attendants while I walked out to the docks with my camera for a lesson in solitude.

The reflection of the cabin lights on the water looked like glittering confetti. I felt tempted to scoop it up and put it in my pocket for safekeeping.

A Few Happy Things

1). All of the birthday comments, tweets, facebook messages, cards and calls I received yesterday. Whoa. If anything can make a girl feel loved on her birthday, it's social media. A huge & heartfelt thanks!

2). The most beautiful camera bag ever. My camera is my baby. I wish I could splurge and give it a snazzy place to rest its head.

3). This red wool cape. Red is my power color and I want to conquer the upcoming fall & winter like a superhero. Except, you know, a stylish one.

4). A love letter to NYC in the form of a poster. Because my city is amazing and there are primary colors involved. Sold.

5). A yellow butterfly. I don't think I could ever buy a preserved butterfly because I'd feel too sorry for it stuck between two slabs of glass. I'm including it here to admire guilt-free, and instead, imagining it alive and fluttering through a garden.

6). The lakeside wedding we're attending this weekend in upstate New York. One last little hoorah before I kiss summer goodbye for good.

Twenty-Five

We spent the weekend inside. All plans, canceled, once we received word the entire NYC transit system would shut down at noon on Saturday. The rain started on Saturday afternoon but the worst of it hit us late that night and early into Sunday morning.

Aside from the post-hurricane snaps I posted yesterday, the photographs I took this weekend subconsciously captured things around our house that emit a sense of familiarity and comfort. Not gonna lie, when I first heard that wind howling, I couldn't stop thinking about the windows crashing on my head while I slept. Destruction spared us in so many ways, but our neighbors have a giant tree uprooted in their backyard and flash flooding continues to threaten the houses just around the corner from our own.

Today, I am thankful for the sight of squirrels scampering up the telephone pole outside my window. People in the neighborhood have banded together to help each other out. Whether the storm affected you directly or not, it's nice to think we're all connected through our humanity, and, our vulnerability.

P.S. The weekend wasn't a complete wash (ha, I made a pun). Our wedding rings arrived (yay!), I broke in new heels by dancing in the bedroom, and Emma made banana pancakes for breakfast. Tiho also caulked the entire bathtub just because he does things like that for fun. Me? I can't not giggle when I hear the word caulk. Oh, and we indulged an epic Modern Family viewing marathon. Phil is my secret lover, didn't I tell you?

That's A lot of Water

When I woke up this morning, I thought the highly anticipated hurricane Irene hadn't done much damage when it hit NJ during the night. Our power was on, windows were intact and a peek out the window conveyed mostly blue skies.

Then, my sister and I went for a walk and saw the flooding. There are sections of the neighborhood where parked cars are almost entirely submerged and the high school football field is under 4 feet of water. The small creek running through town quadrupled in size and now has a current that would probably drown someone if they fell in. Standing on the bridge above it in order to take a few photos made my heart race.

I feel extraordinarily lucky that our home escaped unscathed but am humbled by the damage surrounding me. It is moments like these where the reality of nature's power truly sinks in.

Our Wedding: City Hall Style Preview

I've previously mentioned we're planning two weddings. The short of it: We're eloping at city hall next month for a variety of reasons related to finances/visa stuff/family members being out of the country. Then, in spring of 2013, we're having our "big" wedding celebration complete with a ceremony, reception and loved ones. We've already booked our photographer and are in the midst of locking in a venue for the 2013 date. Early bird gets the worm, right?

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world, because technically, I get to marry the love of my life twice and in two completely different ways.

Much more to come regarding the second wedding, but now, first things first: city hall inspiration.

On Kindess, Kitchen Tables & Goodbyes

On the cape last weekend, my 83-year-old grandmother made the following proclamation at Sunday brunch: "For a long time, I believed intelligence was the most important thing. Now, I know it's kindness."

I wonder what I'll believe 60 years from now. I already agree with her on that one.

We put my mom on a plane to China last night. I'm thrilled for her and her upcoming year of adventure but can't suppress a twinge of anxiety: a year feels like a long time and I will miss her.

Sunset in Nesebar

Many refer to the town of Nesebar as the pearl of the Black Sea. I took these photos over the course of a half hour walk along the water on one of our last evenings on the Bulgarian coast. Looking through them again propels me straight back to the cool salted air, the distant melody of gull song and a canvas so rich in color and light, it reaffirms the presence of something greater than us.

I'm stuck in the middle right now; desperate to hold on to the lingering remnants of summer yet eager to welcome the newness of autumn.

Normally, I find myself excited for the cyclical change of season. It's just that this particular summer was extra good to me and nostalgia isn't so keen on letting go of its tight grip on my wrist. I'm also feeling nervous about all of the significant changes coming--a new school, new classroom, new children, new colleagues.

It feels like time is slipping through my fingers.

Spending the weekend on the Cape did little to quell the dichotomy. It was a perfect two-day respite, which only triggered an even greater sense of disillusionment that busy-busy September is just days away.

And yet, I'm dizzy with excitement for the next few months: a lot of beautiful things waiting there just around the corner.

Ah, conundrums. For now, I'll sit at my kitchen table and reminisce about midnight bonfires on the beach, alfresco family dinners and wine time with cousins. Thanks, Cape Cod: you never fail me.

And what I can get better include a lobster roll (the buttery kind, because mayo and I do not get along).

New Art 'Round Here

When I was walking through Barnes & Noble in Union Square last week, I spotted a rack of beautiful postcards. I couldn't resist scooping a few up and chose to frame this sweet cottage garden scene for our bedroom. The artist is Jessie Krause.

Remember these photos I snapped along the Seine in Paris last month? I had recently heard about Easy Canvas Prints and decided to try them out. I'm thrilled with how my image looks blown up and stretched onto a ready-to-hang canvas. The process literally took three minutes and the parcel arrived on my doorstep within a week of placing the order. (By the way, this is in no way a sponsored post. I almost cried when I received this surprise engagement gift from Nichole of Little Brown Pen. I immediately ran out to buy a frame and am now determining the perfect spot to hang it. Thanks again, Nichole: we love it!

We bought this small, original oil painting from an elderly man with an art stand in Varna, Bulgaria. It cost approximately $10 US dollars and I am still kicking myself for not bagging his entire inventory.

Home Inspiration: Black, White & Bronze

I love the little home we've created but am feeling the itch to jazz it up as the season changes. I didn't even realize the direction I was headed until I grouped all of the inspiration together like this. Pretty clear vision, huh? It's a tad fancier and more modern than what I usually gravitate towards (Tiho affectionately calls me "grandma chic").

The brass standing lamp very well may be my next splurge. I can't stop thinking about how beautiful it would look next to my couch. And that adorably posh chevron pillow? Only $10, my friends.

Those words lingered around me all weekend. There was a lot of rain--buckets worth--but plenty of sunshine, too. Time with the ducks, the trees, the skies. A movie at the local cinema, some writing, a clean house, and crepes for Saturday brunch. We attended an intimate wedding in the city on Sunday. Round the room dancing, raucous laughter, delicious food and drink.

I feel full.

A Week at the Beach in Burgas, Bulgaria

Our first week in Bulgaria was spent on the east coast of the country in the seaside city of Burgas. We stayed in a beach-front hotel in Sunny Beach Resort. At first, I was shocked by the insanely low prices. Bulgaria is really interesting because it's almost entirely unrepresented relative to American tourism. How many of you have ever dreamed of a beach vacation in Greece? How about Bulgaria? That's what I thought.

The views from our hotel balcony were out of this world. We also lucked out with the weather: it rained one afternoon but other than that, nature gave us blue skies and warm breezes.

Our days involved reading, swimming, strolling, napping and eating. We also spent an afternoon at a water park and almost every night walking along the most hoppin' stretch of "boardwalk" I've ever experienced. Imagine a five-mile long street carnival/festival filled with food, music, rides, and souvenir stalls--that's Sunny Beach.

One afternoon, I felt brave and swam topless! It was pretty funny, because for that half hour, I felt like I actually belonged, as opposed to sticking out (no pun intended) like a fair-skinned, chestnut-haired American. Don't get me wrong--I'd say only 1 out of every 20 women went topless on the beach--but it's definitely way more acceptable than it is here. It felt liberating, even if I refused to walk ashore that way. Maybe next time I'll fully succumb to the European culture and banish my modesty.

Most of all, I cherished the downtime with my brand-new fiancé and his family. I'd say I got away with the better end of this deal by inheriting the Black Sea as my life-long vacation destination. Am I right or am I right?

How Do You Stay Creative?

Sometimes, the only thing I want to do is sit on my couch with my laptop, a novel, a glass of wine and a movie. I very much enjoy these activities and like to indulge them in order to relax and unwind.

Conversely, I also recognize how taking the time to create something--anything--makes my spirit come alive. Whether it's slinging words onto paper, using my hands to knead a loaf of bread, or dragging the paintbrush across a blank canvas, my core perks up.

I want to proactively set aside time for these endeavors in my everyday routines. I'm curious: Do you consider yourself creative? If so, how do you integrate creativity into your daily life in a way that feels natural and inspired?

Our Wedding: The Vision

A first attempt at cataloging the "vision" of our wedding. We're currently researching venues: once that's solidified (hopefully within a month or so), I'm psyched to fully plunge in with the planning.
